The Government had approved of four new diesel -powered motor coached & two trailer cars from existing stock suitably modified.The bodies were built at Islington Workshop, with motors & gearboxes obtained under contract. The first power cars, the 300 class were equipped with driving controls at one end only. The 24 - 800 class steel cars built for steam suburban servives in 1944-46 were modified and re-iussed to service as 860 class trailers for use in between two power railcars.The first three car set entered service on 6th. October 1955. By 1958 more railcars were starting to replace steam hauled trains. It was also apparent that the demand during the day, at night & weekends didn't justify three cars. In 1959 the first of the 400 class cars provided the flexibility of one, two, four or five cars consists.In 1961 the thirteen end loading baggage cars, formly use on steam hauled trains, were converted for use in between the 300 class. By this time all diesel & steam hauled suburban train were a thing of the pass. With the last Red Hen's built 1968-71 then replaced the aging Brill rail cars.
