As stated before, South Australian Railway Country passengers & Freight services were taken over in 1975 by the Commonwealth Government, & was known as Australian National Railway. Here you will see trains of The South Australian Railway, Australian National Railways & now Australia Southern Railroad runs the freight part of the old ANR. GSR, Great Southern Railway run the three interstate trains, The Ghan, The Overland & The Indian Pacific. South Australian Railways had two gauge lines, Broad gauge & narrow gauge. |
This Class of Locomotives is notable for the fact that it has worked every line operated by the South Australia Railways, and that units worked on three gauges. The Murray Bridge Division uinits based at Tailem Bend worked all Murray Lands lines, and South East. The Adelaide units worked goods trains over the light lines such as Truro, Spalding, Robertson, Brickworth and Moonta. On the Peterborough Division the standard gauge units work in multiple, often 3 units, to haul ore trains, while the narrow gauge units were use for the Quorn & Wilminton Lines & saw very little mileage. The Eyre Peinsula system was worked entirley by narrow gauge 830 class locomotives. TYPE: Co-Co, BODY: Hood, BUILDER: A.E. Goodwin, H.P.: 900, First one Built in 1959 Photo: Chris Carpenter |
The DA Class is a modified 830 Class. ANR cut way the noise for the use of driver only operations. They are use mostly in shunting yard & some main line work over on the Eyre Peninsula Division. Photo: Chris Carpenter |
4'-8½" gauge. The 600 Class diesel were the heavy engines of the Broken Hill - Port Pirie standard gauge line, & worked on ore & freight trains, and the "Indian - Pacific". TYPE: Co-Co, BODY: Hood, BUILDER: A.E.Goodwin, ENGINE: Alco, H.P.: 1800, WEIGHT: 111 Tons, LENGTH: 54'-6" body & 58'-8" over couplers. There was 7 in the Class, with the first in service in 1965 & the last by 1970. Photo: Chris Carpenter |
The BU class, is a 600 class converted by removing the drive cab & diesel engines, just leaving the traction motors which where powered from the two locos each size of the BU's. Those were not a real success & are not used at the moment. Photo: Chris Carpenter |
