GSR, Great Southern Railway run the three interstate trains, The Ghan, The Overland & The Indian Pacific. South Australian Railways had two gauge lines, Broad gauge & narrow gauge.

This Class of Locomotives is notable for the fact that it has worked every line operated by the South Australia Railways, and that units worked on three gauges. The Murray Bridge Division uinits based at Tailem Bend worked all Murray Lands lines, and South East. The Adelaide units worked goods trains over the light lines such as Truro, Spalding, Robertson, Brickworth and Moonta. On the Peterborough Division the standard gauge units work in multiple, often 3 units, to haul ore trains, while the narrow gauge units were use for the Quorn & Wilminton Lines & saw very little mileage. The Eyre Peinsula system was worked entirley by narrow gauge 830 class locomotives. TYPE: Co-Co, BODY: Hood, BUILDER: A.E. Goodwin, H.P.: 900, First one Built in 1959

The BU class, is a 600 class converted by removing the drive cab & diesel engines, just leaving the traction motors which where powered from the two locos each size of the BU's. Those were not a real success & are not used at the moment.
